Blueprint of Simyeonchoga (四面楚歌)
Text. Jiyoon Chung

At first, we sang. The enemies are outside. At least, that is how it was marked on the blueprint I have with me now. They murmured noisily beyond the walls while singing my song, and I crouched, surrounded by the sound of it. Rumours began to spread alongside the song: ianxia (天下) had already been taken by them. If their dominion extended as far as the song could be heard, then most of the fortress had already been surrendered. The enemies are still outside! They were the vague presence we call people. And I, too, had once been one of them—a distinct yet nameless individual among the crowd. Beyond the walls, people accepted others and, in turn, were accepted themselves. There must be something like intimacy there, like voices joining together in the same song. I pull the eastern wall a hand’s breadth closer to myself. I do the same with the western wall. This becomes my first line of retreat. While staring east and west, trying to drive away the song, their voices creep behind me like ivy climbing a wall. By morning, the boundary will need to be redrawn. As the fortress shrinks, the scale of the blueprint expands beyond control. Without a pen to revise it, I fold the drawing in half to mark the retreating line. East and west meet. I fold it again. Then once more. Folded upon itself, the paper becomes so small and dense that it can no longer be folded. Daybreak is near. Low clouds have been forecast. The fortress will sink into their softness, and as the humidity rises, the surface of its walls darkens. Without noticing, I reach toward the wall that has advanced beneath my chin. I tap its surface with my fingertips and rub it with my palm. I remember, with certainty, the strange smoothness of this wall from the time when I was still one of them—one of those people—when I had once passed through it myself. Dust lodged between the stones absorbs the moisture, and traces invisible at night begin to emerge one by one: marks left by old impacts, scratches, the places where something had clung for a long time before falling away. Each scar, now so close beneath my chin, seems to conceal some ancient secret, like an archaeological fragment. In truth, they probably mean nothing at all. I am still here, surrounded. I no longer know how much of tianxia (天下) has been lost. Whatever remains repeatedly becomes the entirety of the next occupation. The low clouds must have passed through all those places before arriving here.

Antonio’s work relies on the utilization of circular elements along with other semi recognizable environments which seem always suggestive of being structural fragments of a larger tacit body. The circular shapes are points of entry quite literally and grow in ambiguity when we can’t pinpoint which end is it that we’re witnessing, a site of absorption or one of emanation. In Birdshot for example if we take the title at face value we see the work embodying each fired pellet , resulting in a scattered array of dots akin to those in a distribution graph of sorts or most pertinently to the lights in a nighttime cityscape.

Sollee’s work, she approaches her practice with a conviction that is also a question: that meaning cannot exceed its maker. Whenever this question returns like a boomerang, she places herself back within its trajectory. The sculptures presented in this exhibition are reconstructed from felt left over from earlier works. Here, reenactment is not a reproduction of the original but an act that brings the process of making back into the present. Through this repetition, Sollee reconsiders the hierarchy between maker and meaning.
